Ed Drewett puts his spin on Little Mix's 'Black Magic'
Singer-songwriter Ed Drewett is a pop genius, fact. Over the past few years, he has played a huge part in so many of our favourite pop songs, from The Wanted’s ‘Glad You Came’ to Olly Murs’ ‘Dear Darlin’.
Now, Ed is offering up his own version of these chart topping hits as he prepares to release his album Ten on February 8, 2019. Recorded in his house, the album see Ed put his own spin on some of his biggest co-writes, giving music lovers a unique insight into the mind of one of the UK’s hottest songwriters.
Today (November 14), Ed unveiled his version of Little Mix’s ‘Black Magic’, one of his most successful co-writes to date. We all know ‘Black Magic’ as a thumping pop anthem, however, Ed has stripped things back, offering up a swing version which is equally captivating. Whilst there is an air of familiarity to the track, Ed’s version gives us a fresh perspective and also allows his vocals to shine.
Speaking about ‘Black Magic’, Ed said: “‘Black Magic’ is one of my favourite songs, ever. It was one of those that gave me stupid, excitable, childish energy from the start. From the second Ed (Erfjord) played the chords, to the ‘guilty pleasure’ of the soaring chorus melody, to the fun we had telling the story of the powers of this secret potion, I knew we were onto something special.
“In regards to the acoustic version, I wanted to play around with it a little. Swing was always one of my favourite genres – I grew up singing Sinatra at local pubs & weddings – so I wondered…’would ‘Black Magic’ work swung?!’
“It’s kind of an unwritten saying in music that a good song can translate into any style and I think we pulled it off! It’s everything I look for in a song and one myself and i’m sure Camille (Purcell), Ed (Erfjord) and Henrik (Michelsen) are extremely proud of!”
