Sumi X Releases Beguiling Electric Baby
Rising pop star Sumi X releases her debut single, “Electric Baby,” a song about the person who brings exhilaration and colorful energy into your existence.
Born Sumi Krishnan in Pittsburgh, Sumi X grew up inspired by the hard work of her parents, who taught her that dreams are attained through determination and drive. When she was eight years old, she fell under the spell of music, watching her sister play flute in the marching band.
Later, Sumi played trumpet in high school, winning the Jazz at Lincoln Center award her senior year, followed by sharing the stage with Wynton Marsalis. In college, she sang vocal jazz, followed by starting an IT management company with 200 employees. Despite being named one of Inc. Magazine’s ’30 under 30,’ along with her company being named one of Inc. 500’s “fastest growing companies,” Sumi’s secret desire was to be an artist.
She started songwriting and learned to play guitar, all while running her company. Finally, after 10 years, she decided to go for it – she sold her company and moved to Nashville to “come out” as an artist.
A few months later, the global pandemic hit followed shortly by the US 2020 elections, and Sumi felt the call to get active in politics and put her music on the backburner…yet again.
In 2021, she moved to LA to pursue music full-time and hasn’t looked back since. She developed an artist persona, Sumi X, representing the struggles with identity she has faced her entire life. From being bullied and “othered” for being Indian American to pursuing an education and career that she wasn’t aligned with in order to meet cultural expectations, she spent much of her life trying hard to fit into a mold that wasn’t made for her.
Sumi X explains, “Because of my own journey, I’m passionate about using my voice and platform to help other ‘misfits’ find the courage and confidence to be their authentic selves in a confusing world.”
“Electric Baby” opens on low-slung swirling tones topped by the velvety voice of Sumi X, backed by radiant harmonies, imbuing the tune with depth and dimension. With her delicious phrasing and delivery, Sumi X infuses the lyrics with urgent, seductive passion.
